We were supposed to go to Meru National Park but found out this morning that much of the park was impassable due to all of the rain. They were only allowing people on the main road and we were told we wouldn’t see any animals along it.
An American volunteer I’d met a few weeks ago told me he was meeting up with some other volunteers to cook American food and watch American movies. I couldn’t turn down that offer!
I spent the night in Chogoria cooking delicious spaghetti and watching Modern Family, the Simpsons, Parks & Recreation, and The Office. It was awesome and a much needed break. I felt much more comfortable walking around the town there too because people didn’t stare or shout things at us as we walked by. It’s a common starting point for treks up Mt. Kenya, so the people there are used to seeing mzungus around.
The next day we drove to another town and met up with a fourth volunteer at the boarding school she works at. We talked for a while about our projects as we drank Crystal Light fruit punch and waited for our macaroni and cheese to cook. We played a few intense rounds of Bananagrams, in which I came in last every round, and listened to American pop music. It was a perfect day.
