It's been over two months since I got back to the States and I'm still reminded of Kenya on a weekly basis. Since returning to campus I've spoken at four study abroad and international co-op info sessions about my experiences in Kenya. After one of the talks a father of a prospective student told me about his current work in Kenya distributing microloans in Maasai communities. The more people I meet and the more places I go, the smaller the world seems.
I received a call a few weeks ago from a number I didn't recognize and was really excited to answer the phone and hear Alexia on the other end. It was my first call from Kenya since being back and it was great to hear from them. Mubichi told me the kids had been asking for me at SOS Kindergarten and some of my health club students had even stopped by the office to find me. A number of the kindergartners didn't realize or understand that I had left to go back home. I was so sad to hear that! It really made me miss my weekly lessons with all of them.
I've gotten some exciting Kenya-related news recently: I received 2nd place for my Coolest Co-op video and my abstract for my malnutrition research paper was selected for Tufts University's "Future of Food and Nutrition" Conference. I'll be presenting my findings there at the end of March. I also continue to research malnutrition and best practices for malnutrition prevention programs for my International Affairs Senior Capstone paper.
I may have left Kenya, and currently have no plans to return, but it's comforting knowing that my work continues as well as my connection to the country and the people I met.
